About Mandi Dabwali

On the border of Haryana and Punjab, Mandi Dabwali is a small town of the Sirsa district. The place had developed from a small village “meaning of Mandi” to an urban town with a municipality of its own. Due to its unique location and proximity to three states of India, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, this town has got an essence of all the three cultures among its local population. The main language of communication has remained as Punjabi. Dabwali is popular in the northern India for the presence of industries, which manufacture agricultural tools and jeep modification parts.

History of Mandi Dabwali

This part of India was once formed part of Delhi Sultanate and saw the rule of Feroz Shah Tughlaq during the 13th Century AD, who founded the city of Sirsa. Afterwards Mughals dominated the political scene of India established their firm grip over most parts of India including Hisar. Finally they gave way to Britishers who after defeating various native rulers became master of the land. Post independence, present Haryana state was formed on 1st November, 1966 with Dabwali village coming under the Sirsa tehsil in 1968. On September 1, 1975 a separate Sirsa district came into existence, with Sirsa town as the head quarter. Mandi Dabwali came under its administration.

Geography of this area

Mandi Dabwali is exactly situated at 29°97' North and 74°70' East, almost at the border of the Haryana state. The average elevation of this region is 198 metre above the sea level. On the right side is the Punjab territory while it has been brushed by the Rajasthan state from left. This town is very well connected with all major towns of Haryana. Dabwali is about 63 kms from the district head quarter, Sirsa main town and is surrounded by sub-tehsils like, Lambi, Sangat, Odhan and Gidderbaha. Dabwali has a hot and dry climate for most of the year. Summers are extremely hot with temperature touching almost 42 degree Celsius. May and June are the hottest months which witnesses almost zero rainfall. July receives most of the rainfall of the year and precipitation can touch almost 177mm. Rainfall is very less in this region. Average yearly rainfall is around 277mm. Winter months are short lived with an overall cool and pleasant weather. Temperature ranges between 5 degree and 20 degree Celsius during winters. This region has a sandy loamy soil variant that is partially fertile in nature. Cotton and Wheat comprises of the major share of agricultural land. Farming is done on artificial canal network. The ground water level is pretty low with high contain of Salt or Sodium.

The population of Mandi Dabwali is approximately 52,873 as per 2011 Census of India. Male population comprises of 53% while the remaining of 47% consists of the female populace. The average literacy rate of this region is 65% which is higher than the national literacy rate. The male and female literacy rates are simultaneously 80% and 71%. The population below 6 years in Dabwali currently is 13%. Dabwali has become a mix of communities from Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Majority of the locals are from Punjab, which has made Punjabi the prime language of this place. Other than this Hindi, Hariyanvi, Rajasthani and English are commonly used by the locals. In terms of religion, Dabwali is kind of a cosmopolitan town with people of all communities like, Sikhism, Jainism, Hinduism, Bishnoi, Islam and Christianity living in harmony.

AdministrativelySirsa district has been divided into four tehsils namely, Sirsa, Dabwali, Rania and Ellenabad which has been again broken into seven blocks. Dabwali is also an independent block and a Vidhana Saudha constituency. At the helm of the district is the District Commissioner or Magistrate who is helped by the Additional Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and Sub-divisional Officers. Mandi Dabwali has its own Sub-divisional Officer (civil) who looks after the revenue generation, public infrastructure and law and order. Dabwali being a tehsil has its tehsildar who looks after the adjacent villages under this block. For the central town planning and its public works there is Dabwali Municipal Council, headed by the Chief Secretary. He is appointed by the District Commissioner and is given responsibility of all basic and emergency amenities inside the town area.

Tourist Spots in Dabwali

When it comes to tourism, there is hardly anything to view in Dabwali. People visit from other parts of India only for industrial work and other business purposes. There are few local temples like the Hanuman Mandir, Panchbhut Mahadev Mandir, Vaishno Mata Mandir and Durga Mandir. Transportation in Mandi Dabwali

Dabwali has its own railway station centrally located from Muktsar and Lambi tehsils. This railway track is a part of the north western railway of India. The nearest railway junctions are the Batinda Junction (39kms) and Sisra Junction (64kms). Many important trains touch this station and connect it with other parts of India.
